The Arts Society, WGC: Opening the doors – a brief history of country house visiting
Since the Middle Ages castles, monasteries and country houses have welcomed visitors – initially as guests or pilgrims, later as tourists. With the opening of Hampton Court Palace in 1838 and then the spread of the railways, bicycles and cars, visits became increasingly popular. After two world wars, pioneers found new ways to attract paying visitors to their houses and estates.
Visitors welcome.
